Gas Natural obtains authorisation to operate in belgian gas market

The energy multinational is the first Spanish company to form part of Belgium's Zeebrugge gas hub, allowing it to operate in the country.

GAS NATURAL has obtained the necessary permits from the Belgian gas network operator (Huberator) for it to participate in the country's gas market, making it the first Spanish company to join Belgium's Zeebrugge gas hub.

From now on GAS NATURAL will be able to buy and sell gas on the Belgian market, through new agreements that give the company a portfolio of trading options and the opportunity to sell gas in the industrial and domestic markets.

It will also be able to operate, via Belgium, in the gas markets of other European countries, giving it access to other business opportunities in the future.

International expansion and market diversification

GAS NATURAL currently operates in the Spanish and French wholesale gas markets, and strives to optimise business opportunities across a range of products, time frames and markets, with a strategy based on expansion and geographical diversification, especially in European markets.

In particular, the energy company is expanding its direct activities in the North Sea hubs and the rest of Europe, and seeking new opportunities in the Mediterranean and Atlantic areas. The company's entry into new markets allows it to diversify its sources of business, which is vital in a market that is increasingly sophisticated, competitive and globalised. This expansion process is taking place via two channels: gas sales and the development of assets; and trading, which enables the company to optimise its operations and to obtain margins in international physical and financial markets for gas and power, coal and CO2.

At present, GAS NATURAL is also developing its electricity trading activities in the Spanish, Portuguese, French, Austrian and German markets, and operates in the forward and spot markets, as well as in the management of interconnections. In the CO2 markets, the company buys and sells emissions rights and credits across a range of terms.

GAS NATURAL also operates in the financial markets, trading oil, coal and gas derivatives, and carrying out transactions to optimise sales of the Group's physical coal assets.
