Gas Natural Fenosa Renovables (60%) and ALSTOM WIND (40%) create the wind power company, Tramuntana S.L. for the Catalan wind power public tender

The consortium formed by GAS NATURAL FENOSA RENOVABLES and ALSTOM WIND is the only competitor applying for the 7 ZDPs offered in the wind power public tender in Catalonia.

This alliance is based on the leadership and long experience of both groups in the energy sector and on their special roots in Catalonia.

GAS NATURAL FENOSA RENOVABLES, the company which groups together the renewable assets and those in the special scheme of GAS NATURAL FENOSA, and ALSTOM WIND have created the wind power company Tramuntana SL, with a shareholding by both companies of 60% and 40% respectively, to develop the projects up for award in the Catalan wind power public tender.

GAS NATURAL FENOSA RENOVABLES y ALSTOM WIND make up the only consortium which has entered the public tender for wind power in Catalonia by bidding for the 7 ZDPs under offer, in line with their firm commitment to develop an integrated wind power plan in Catalonia, adapted to the requirements of each different territory.

The consortium has presented 20 projects to the tender, for a total of 702 MW, which optimise the use of wind power resources. The industrial plan presented rests on three basic pillars which include the creation of wealth at the local level, the reinforcement of the industrial fabric and boosting technology.

With the objective of strengthening the Catalan industrial fabric, the proposal includes projects connected to the activity of GAS NATURAL FENOSA in Catalonia, to energy efficiency, to biomass and to the industry related to renewable energies.

The Tramuntana Project also aims to situate Catalonia at the worldwide forefront of renewable energy technology, with R&D projects, and collective agreements with Catalan universities and public institutions.

The Wind Power Tender in Catalonia

The Catalan Regional Government, the Generalitat de Cataluña, approved seven of the eight Zonas de Desarrollo Prioritario (ZDP) (Priority Development Zones) and convoked a public tender for 769 MW of wind power distributed among 37 towns and 10 counties. With this public tender, the Catalan government expects to meet the objective established in its Energy Plan 2006-2015 and arrive at the target of 3,500 wind power MW in 2015.

On the one hand, the proposal presented by GAS NATURAL FENOSA RENOVABLES and ALSTOM WIND, brings the technological capacity of Alstom, which has the headquarters of its wind power division in Barcelona, for the design and manufacture of wind turbines, as well as its experience in the optimisation of the design of wind farms.

On the other, GAS NATURAL FENOSA; the leading energy company in Catalonia, will bring its long national and international experience in the operation of power stations.

For GAS NATURAL FENOSA, taking part in the wind power tender in Catalonia means taking a new step forward in its strategy of increasing its share of the final market of electricity generated under the special scheme, in order to reach levels congruent with its current contribution in the other types of energy and to consolidate a position of leadership in renewable energies wherever it carries out its business.

Recently GAS NATURAL FENOSO has gathered together all its renewable energy assets and those in the special scheme in one company, GAS NATURAL FENOSA RENOVABLES, which manages a portfolio of around 1,000 MW of installed power which means an annual production of 2,000 GWh.

ALSTOM, which for its part has installed 25% of the world energy generation capacity, has played a very important role in the development of the Spanish wind power market, which is the second biggest in Europe. From the worldwide headquarters and R&D centre of ALSTOM WIND in Barcelona, more than 400 employees work to develop the wind turbines of the future. The initiative to participate in this wind power tender will mean continuing to reinforce innovation in wind power technology, and from Barcelona.

ALSTOM, world leader in energy infrastructure

Alstom is the world leader in infrastructures for the generation and transmission of electric power and rail transport and is a reference in technologies which are innovative and which respect the environment. The group builds the fastest trains in the world and the automatic metro with the greatest capacity. Equally, it supplies integrated turnkey solutions for electric power stations, in addition to associated services for a wide variety of energy sources including hydro-electric, nuclear, gas, coal and wind power.

Alstom also supplies a wide range of solutions for the transmission of electric energy, with a special focus on intelligent networks. The Group has 96,500 employees in 70 countries and achieved sales of 23,000 million euros in 2009/2010 (invoice value).

GAS NATURAL FENOSA, the leading integrated energy company in Spain

GAS NATURAL FENOSA is one of the leading multinational companies in the gas and electricity sector, is present in 23 countries and has more than 20 million customers.

After the acquisition of the electricity company, Unión Fenosa, the third biggest in the Spanish market, GAS NATURAL FENOSA has achieved its objective of integrating the gas and electricity businesses in a company with long experience in the energy sector, able to compete efficiently in markets subject to a process of increasing integration, globalisation and competition.

It is the largest integrated gas and power company in Spain and Latin America, leading the natural gas sales market in the Iberian Peninsula, and is the world's third largest liquid natural gas (LNG) operator, with a fleet of 13 methane carriers.
