Alstom signs contracts for new Small Hydro Plants in Brazil

Alstom has signed two contracts with Brookfield Renewable Power (BRP) to supply key plant equipment to the Pezzi and Serra dos Cavalinhos II small hydro plants (SHP) in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. These contracts are part of BRP’s plans to install between 100 to 150 MW of SHPs per year over the next five years.

Alstom’s scope of supply for each project includes two Kaplan “S” turbines, two generators, two speed controllers, two voltage regulators, and the assembly and commissioning supervision of this equipment. Alstom’s Kaplan “S” turbines are specifically developed to fit SHP needs. They provide a solution that combines cost effectiveness with efficiency, flexibility, reliability and high annual production.

The 20 MW Pezzi SHP will be built on the Antas River, between the municipalities of Bom Jesus and Jaquirana. Commissioning should start in September 2012. The 29 MW Serra dos Cavalinhos II SHP will be located in the municipalities of São Francisco de Paula and Monte Alegre dos Campos and commissioning should begin in November 2012.

Equipment for the projects is being manufactured at Alstom’s Taubaté plant, one of its largest Hydro manufacturing plants in the world. Taubaté produces a wide range of products, such as turbines of all sizes, generators for several applications, hydromechanical equipment and small hydroelectric plants.

“Most equipment in the hydro plants owned by Brookfield Renewable Power has been supplied by Alstom. We’re determined to maintain our position as the main supplier to the company over coming years, helping to expand the installed capacity in Brazil, which should grow at least 5% a year”, said Marcos Costa, Head of Power Alstom Brazil and Latin America.

Alstom is actively involved in Brazil’s SHP market. Among recent achievements, it successfully implemented in Rio de Janeiro, a Generation Operation Centre, which is responsible for the remote operation and maintenance of 16 small hydro plants distributed in 4 states (Goiás, Minas Gerais, Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro, including a substation).
