Alstom adds 293 MW to India’s hydropower capacity

Alstom in India today announced that it has won three major contracts worth above Rs. 270 crores (over €40 million) to build hydroelectric projects in the country.

The first contract has been signed with Shiga Energy Pvt Ltd for the 97 MW Tashiding hydroelectric project based in West Sikkim district on the Rathang Chu river. The second contract has been signed with NSL Tidong Power Generation Pvt Ltd for the Tidong 1 hydroelectric project in Kinnaur District in the State of Himachal Pradesh, consisting of two 50 MW units. The third contract has been signed with Haridwar Infrastructure Private Ltd for the Dikchu hydroelectric project on the river Dikchu, a tributary of Teesta River in East Sikkim, for a 96 MW plant.

The contract for the Tashiding project includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the entire electro mechanical package including the turbines, generator, 220 KV outdoor switchyard, General Step-Up (GSU) transformers, Balance of Plant and auxiliaries. The contract for Tidong 1 project includes the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of the turbines, generators and auxiliaries, and the contract for Dikchu project includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of the turbines, generators and auxiliaries.

All equipment will be manufactured at Alstom’s Vadodara facility in Gujarat, one of the company’s largest hydro equipment manufacturing hubs worldwide.

Francois Carpentier, Managing Director & Vice Chairman, Alstom Projects India Limited, said, “With these new contracts, Alstom will be able to support the government’s initiative in developing the power industry as a whole and hydro in particular as part of its commitment to reduce CO2. Building on Alstom’s technical expertise and clean power solutions, these projects will be a useful addition to the country’s power map. Alstom is happy to be supporting India’s objective to add more renewable energy to the network.”

India is endowed with an economically exploitable and viable hydro potential of about 84,000 MW. However, only 19.9% of this potential has been harnessed so far. Additional hydropower capacity would diversify India’s energy mix, currently reliant on fossil fuels, thus contributing to energy security and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

These three contracts follow a major contract won by Alstom with Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) to install the 1000 MW Tehri variable speed pumped storage hydro power plant in the state of Uttarakhand. The project was booked in the second quarter of the current fiscal year.

Alstom is well positioned to serve India’s growing hydro needs. Projects currently under execution include the 2000 MW Subansiri Lower hydroelectric power plant in the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, India’s largest hydro project.
